DIY Reed Diffuser

Reed diffusers made with essential oils are a great natural alternative to making your home smell nice and fresh. I made some DIY reed diffusers at home using up old empty essential oil bottles. You can use any bottle so long as it doesn’t have a wide opening at the top and isn’t plastic (plastic reacts with some essential oils).

The first time I made diffusers I tried using bamboo skewers, however bamboo isn’t as effective at diffusing the scents as rattan reed sticks… so I highly recommend grabbing some of those instead. Be sure you turn the reed sticks upside down, and swirl the oil every few days to continue being able to smell the scents for longer.

Try using your favorite scents or mix some together to make a new combination. ALl you need are reed sticks, essential oils, a carrier oil (such as safflower or almond oil), and a container.

DIY Reed Diffuser Method

Ingredients:

Sweet Almond oil (enough to fill your bottles)
a few drops of your favorite essential oils
diffuser bottle
reed sticks (that stick out of the bottle at least 2 inches above the top of the bottle)

note: the ratio of carrier oil to essential oil should be 75% to 25%

Method:

  1. Stir together 3 parts carrier oil to 1 part essential oils of your choice
  2. Pour oils into a bottle
  3. Insert the reed sticks into the bottle, and then after about an hour turn them around and insert them upside down.

Note: Be sure you turn the reed sticks upside down, and swirl the oil every few days to continue being able to smell the scents for longer.
